Carlton Hires Former Zell Executive Ellis as Real Estate Adviser
June 1, 2011
Carlton Group Ltd., a commercial property investment bank, hired Sybil Ellis, former co-head of investments at Sam Zell’s Equity Office Properties Trust, to advise and assist global real estate buyers.
Ellis left Equity Office, once the biggest U.S. office landlord, in 2002 and formed her own advisory firm. She’ll be president of a new investment management division at Carlton, the company that arranged the recapitalization of the General Motors building in New York in 2004 and Chicago’s Willis Tower, then called the Sears Tower, in 2007.
“She fuels the global strategic expansion that we have,” Howard Michaels, chairman of New York-based Carlton, said in a telephone interview. “She has an international Rolodex of investors throughout the Middle East, London, which was created when she was at EOP and did $15 billion in deals.”
Ellis’s team will help domestic and international clients plan investments and work through the process of completing deals. She’ll be based at a new Carlton office in Chicago, part of an effort to expand the firm’s reach that includes the opening last month of a London location, Michaels said.
As a self-employed consultant, Ellis’s clients included Farallon Capital Management LLC of San Francisco; Ronin U.S. Direct Property Fund, a former unit of AMP Group in Australia; and two Italian vintners, the Frescobaldi and Antinori families, according to Carlton.
